Silver Gelatin Prints

My photographs are taken using either medium format film or full frame digital cameras. Let us agree that a photograph is not fully realized until it is printed. High resolution scans of the film negatives produce digital files that, along with their digital brethren, can be turned to paper with inkjet printers. The quality of the papers and printers available today can result in stunning prints. And yet, there is something magical about silver gelatin prints on fibre base paper that no inkjet can reproduce. The shadows, texture, highlights, … they are all rendered differently than their inkjet counterparts.

To produce a silver gelatin print, it is now the digital files that must be turned into negatives. The paper is developed in the darkroom the same way regardless of the nature of the negative. The way the paper is “worked” on the enlarger is slightly different, but it still involves the artist. The retouching of each print is done by hand. Making silver gelatin prints is a labour-intensive process, but it is, to me at least, extremely rewarding as an artist. These are the only prints I produce and sell. Of some, only one copy has been made. Some are limited series of very small numbers. Each, however, is unique. You can never exactly replicate the way the paper was worked in the darkroom, nor the retouching. All prints are treated using archival methods that we know will preserve them from the passage of time.  A certificate of authenticity is included with each piece.

Books

Mathematics Photography
The mathematician who wanted to see

All versions of the book share the same hard cover, and the same Fedrigoni Stucco paper for 80 pages of exquisitely printed black and white images. The books use Swiss binding to allow for easy display of photographs presented across the span of two pages. In addition to the regular offering, there are two types of limited edition boxes. Both include a silver gelatin print (series of 7) with a certificate of authenticity. The choices of prints are Three Boys and Stump. â€‹

My life as a mathematician undoubtedly reflects my attitude towards photography  A beautifully composed short three-page essay --written by Dr. D. Prelat and edited by Prof. R. Burch-- shades light into this connection.
